General Body Meetings (GBMs)

General Body Meetings (GBMs)

General Body Meetings (GBMs) are CLJSS’s primary forum for discussion, community-building, and member updates. Meetings typically occur every other week and center on a curated CLJ topic, current events, and upcoming opportunities.

Overview

GBMs are open meetings designed to help students connect criminology, law, and justice concepts to real-world issues and professional pathways. Each GBM includes: (1) brief organization updates, (2) a focused discussion segment led by the board or guest(s), and (3) time for announcements and opportunities (research, internships, volunteering, scholarships, and campus resources).

What happens at a GBM

A typical meeting includes:

  • CLJSS updates (upcoming events, involvement opportunities, key deadlines)

  • A featured CLJ topic (structured discussion with guiding questions)

  • Opportunities + resources (internships, research, scholarships, conferences, campus resources)

  • Community + networking (meet other students; connect with faculty/guests when applicable)

Who should attend

GBMs are for any UIC student interested in criminology, law, justice policy, courts, corrections, public safety, or related careers. No prior experience is required—just an interest in learning, discussion, and getting involved.

Upcoming GBMs

Below is our current schedule. Each listing includes the topic, logistics, RSVP link, and (when available) a related article to read before or after the meeting.
